How to make the number trustworthy
- Cover a whole period. A single month of fuel with a year of insurance produces a number that means nothing.
- Use two odometer readings for the distance, taken at the start and the end of that period.
- Include the boring items: inspection fees, tyres, wipers, parking and tolls. They are the difference between a rough guess and a real figure.
- For value lost, use a price someone would pay today — a dealer offer or comparable listings — not what you hope the vehicle is worth.
Why lost value usually wins
For most vehicles bought within the last few years, the largest cost is not fuel or servicing but the value the vehicle quietly lost while parked. No receipt records it, so calculators built on fuel alone report a cost per kilometre that is comfortably wrong. That is why this page asks for the two prices separately and shows you what share of the answer they produce.
The opposite is also worth knowing: on an old, cheap, well-kept vehicle, lost value can be nearly nothing, and the honest cost per kilometre is far lower than the internet average suggests.
What is a record and what is an estimate
Money you spent is a record: there is an invoice, a receipt or a card statement behind it. Value lost is an estimate: it depends on a price nobody has paid yet. Both belong in the answer, but they should never be presented as the same kind of fact — which is why the table above marks each line.

Which currency does this use?
Whichever one you type. The calculator never converts between currencies, so keep every field in the same money.
Does this page store my figures?
They are saved only in this browser on this device, so the page remembers them when you return. They are never uploaded to Bortio. Clearing your browser data or using “Clear figures” removes them.
Is cost per kilometre the same as fuel consumption?
No. Fuel consumption covers one line of the bill. Cost per kilometre includes servicing, insurance, taxes and, if you filled those fields in, the value the vehicle lost.
